I have the unfortunate task of informing everybody that Jeff Matthews passed away at 11:30 am this morning, Saturday May 19th.

Jeff had been valiantly fighting cancer for over five years. He left us surrounded by his family and friends.

I will greatly miss one of my best friends and travel partners.

Please say prayers for Jeffs family.

I'm going to try to answer some common questions I've heard as folks get used to the VP scoring system.

#1 - The design of the system is to keep the playing field level for any member who attends 4 or more tournaments in a year. This way a player can't run away with the points title just by attending 15 tournametns; moreover, any member who attends at least 4 events (strategically in the same section) maxes out the same number of events counting toward their point total heading into the Main Event.

#2 - You can get a total of 6 events into one section IF you attend all 4 scheduled events PLUS attend and place an OPEN tny in there and MOVE ONE from another section or region into that section. ***HOWEVER, even if you end up with 4 or 5 scores loaded into one section you only get to count the BEST 4 in that section.

#3 - All declarations MUST be made prior to the draft of the tournament moving. If the event is JOINT SOMT/STAR you have to announce which region gets the points before the draft otherwise the points default into the STAR region. If you want to MOVE points from another section or from a STAR event you again MUST announce this prior to the draft.

#4 - STAR doesn't require you declare movement or location until a preset time a few weeks before the regionals. The way this is handled is IF you are moving points FROM SOMT into STAR you can do this anytime as long as you satisify STARs criteria. HOWEVER, you may not move a negative score out of SOMT after-the-fact. IF you are moving points FROM STAR into SOMT you must adhere to SOMTs rules and make the announcement prior to the draft. **NOTE: You can only get credit for a tournament in one region. Pete Nelson is tracking ALL events for these purposes as well as Papal Room seeding.

#5 - The CLUB CHAMPION is the member in good standing who has the most Victory Points after the Main Event (November 9th thru 11th 2012).

#6 - The top 8 to 12 (depending on Main Event field size) members in the VP standings are seeded respectively heading into the Main Event. The top 2 or 3 of that group (again, depending on how many divisions we have at the Main Event) serve as Division Selectors.

#7 - The ONLY points that carry into the Main Event is a members BEST section score. For example if Doug Yano leads RED with 125 points and also has 86 points in BLACK and 44 points in GOLD .... the only points that count are the 125 since that is his BEST section. That underscores the purpose of this system -- playing in multiple sections gives Doug (in the above example) more opportunity to score well in a section - HOWEVER he can only take points from ONE section heading into the Main Event --- and each section is limited to just FOUR events.

#8 - Main Event seeds are:

#1 section winner with most points
#2 section winner with second highest points
#3 section winner with third highest points
#4 section winner with 4th highest points
#5 section runner-up with most points
#6 section runner-up with the second most points
#7 secton runner-up with the third most points
#8 section runner-up with the 4th most points
#9 thru #12 if applicable -- at large seeds and the members with the most points not already listed in the top 8.

Members must pre-register for the Main Event as usual. The BOD will group the field into "A", "B" and "C". The division selections must choose equally from all fields.

#9 - The final calculation to determine the Club Champion is his score heading into the Main Event (as described above) PLUS his score at the Main Event.

#10 - The Club Champion is also guaranteed a Papal Room seat. If this person doesn't attend the Worlds the next highest VP finisher gets the seat and so-forth down the list. IF there are 51 entries at the Worlds and subsequently 6 divisions the region in STAR or SOMT who had the most regular season total attendance will get the extra seat. IF 61 attending and 7 divisions the top 2 regions via attendance get the extra seats. As it stands now SOMT will receive ONE seat for sure and should receive TWO seats if 51 attend this year's Worlds in Orlando, FL.

Don't confuse the above with vesting. To be vested in the club bonus fund you only need to attend any 3 events (regardless of section). The above is for VP scoring not vesting.

Lastly, along with the Papal Room seat the Club Champion has his name engraved on the club cup and he holds the clup for the next club season. Finally, the CC gets to choose, TD and pick the rules for the September Throwback the following season. (The February Throwback is choosen by membership vote of those attending).

Payouts:

We will pay out a nice BASE prize fund at the Main Event that anyone attending can win. Additionally, we will play out a significant bonus fund that any attending player who is vested can also win. Finally, we will pay out more bonus monies to the top finishers in the VP race.

We expect 24 to 30 members attending the Main Event this year. Based on 30 attending we will be paying out more than $7,500.

I hope this helps everyone ... fire away with any questions.
